Calming the waves is a set of light sculptures that use pixel mapping to display videos on homemade LED matrices to present the concept of "Impervious to rain or shine, I'll have my own will". (Original from ancient Chinese poem 定风波, written by Su Shi )
These two light sculptures represent sunny and rainy days, respectively, and, like the poem, they do not communicate with each other, but rather present their own unique transformation of light.
Digitally processed videos create a transformation of the lights. Two videos were taken on a sunny day and a rainy day. The footage of the sunny day first was converted into 2*5 pixel image per frame. For the rainy one, raindrops were traced and converted into the same size pixel image as the sunny one. Then, these two groups of images were converted into a text file to control the LED matrix and stored in the SD card.
